Abstract
The effect of epidermal growth factor(EGF) on the growth rate of cultured human oral epithelium compare to serum and insulin was studied.
In culture system, cell proliferation and DNA sythesis of human oral epithelium were stimulated by EGF. Stimulation of cell proliferation and DNA synthesis was maximal at 10-6M of EGF.
The effect of EGF was similar to that of fetal calf serum, but was distinguished by the ability of serum to stimulate further the cells maximally stimulated initially by EGF.
The response of human oral epithelium to the combined action of serum and EGF was greater than the response to either substance alone. Even at the concentrations of EGF well above those required for maximal effects on DNA synthesis, the addition of serum produced a further stimulation of thymidine incorporation.
This effect was similarly observed at either 5% or 10% fetal calf serum.
